Inspired?

On This Day in Christian History
365 Amazing and Inspiring Stories about Saints, Martyrs and Heroes
by Robert Morgan
Morgan’s book compiles stories from over 2000 years of Christian history and introduces the readers to great men and women of faith, some obscure and some well-known.   The stories are short and easy to read and challenges the reader to reflect on God’s hand in the small and large details of life.  Scripture is included with each day’s reading.
This book has an inspiring and encouraging preface and I was excited to start my journey through 2000 years of “anecdotes from an alphabet of characters from Ambrose to Zinzendorf.”  However, I was disappointed in the content.  Many of the stories were weak in information or a stretch to match “that day in history.”  Yes, he tells about the martyrs and I don’t want to make light of their stories.  Yet, I found myself left unsatisfied after reading the day’s reading.  As I skimmed story after story, I found myself wanting an index that would let me find the “character” I wanted to read about.  Or maybe the place I wanted to “travel” to.  While the book has a topical index, it is lacking in an index of the characters it is chronicling.  I persevered and found myself thinking that this book could possibly be more useful in a desk calendar format versus a devotional book.
Overall, I did not find it an inspiring book or even an useful reference tool.
